  4. posts in concrete and hardcore.

  14. Concrete mixer, shovel, mixing board, breaker, 
  15. sledgehammer, bucket, spirit level.

  18. Concrete, hardcore, posts.

  20. Step 1 - Removing bricks or concrete
  21. If you have to make a hole in a solid surface then 
  22. either take up the slab or bricks, or break the 
  23. concrete with a hammer.  Remove the debris and 
  24. dig below. Alternatively hire a breaker.

  26. Step 2 - Digging the hole
  27. Dig each hole to the required depth; this should 
  28. be at least 760mm for tall posts. Try and keep 
  29. the hole as narrow as possible for the size of 
  30. the post.

  32. Step 3 - Inserting the post
  33. Insert a post so that one side is against the string 
  34. guideline and pack some hardcore round the base to 
  35. keep it upright. Make sure ridges for gravel board 
  36. and panels or holes for wire are facing the correct 
  37. way.

  39. Step 4 - Checking the horizontal
  40. Lay a length of timber across the top of two consecutive 
  41. posts and use a spirit level to check that the tops are 
  42. level.

  44. Step 5 - Checking the vertical 
  45. Again use the spirit level to check the vertical 
  46. alignment, then pack in more hardcore and bricks. 
  47. Pack the hardcore down into the hole to make sure 
  48. the wind canÆt blow the post out of position. 
  49. If necessary use a temporary support-stay pegged 
  50. in at the bottom to keep it in place.

  52. Step 6 - Filling the hole with concrete
  53. The type of fence determines whether to erect it 
  54. before concreting in. Fill the top half with concrete 
  55. creating a small ridge at bottom of the post to 
  56. disperse water.
